History of Chemistry Early Period

Early Period
The history of knowledge is as old as the history of mankind on earth human beings started their activities in chemistry when the process of burning was first discovered. Some of the oldest societies were familiar with chemical materials extracted from herbs. They used this material for hardening the soft branches of trees and these hard branches were then used as arrows. Study of the old Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Gandhara and the Chinese civilizations indicates that all these civilizations ere familiar with metallurgy, physical properties of matter and chemical colors. These colors were used in painting, glass making and other chemical arts.Apart from these they were also familiar with the techniques of dyeing and paper making.
Greek philosopher empedocles introduced the concept of four elements on earth. These elements were fire, air, earth and water. According to him these elements were not inter-convertible.
Aristotle also believed that all matter was derived from these four basic elements and his opinion about the inter-conversion of these elements was the same. Greek period was mostly the age of theoretical science. Chemistry is basically a practical science. Therefore this branch of science could not make tangible progress during the Greek period.
